Hog Hunting Tips

1. For eating purposes avoid the big boar hogs. They are the hardest to kill and the poorest to eat. For food and for population control it is much more effective to take out the sows.
   

2. When building traps always put them in shaded places. Hogs can't handle the heat and could die of exposure if left without shade all day, of course this means on a hot summer day.

3. When stand hunting approach your stand from a different direction than you expect the hogs to approach from. Remember a hogs eyesight isn't great but they have a super sense of smell.

4. Remember to check traps every couple of days, even in the winter time because they need water even during the colder days of the year.

5. Baiting hogs were legal is an excellent way to get the hogs within bow range.

6. If your hunting grounds are limited you can hunt hogs by using a feeder without turning them away from the feeder by hunting the trails that they are using to reach the feeder. This way they won't associate the feeder with the hunting pressure. They will alter their travel patterns but still continue to use the feeder.

7. A dog that has a good nose can be a big help in recovering a wounded hog. Big hogs are usually fat, and their wounds close up quickly often this causes a poor blood trail.

8. Plan to change stands if you shoot at or miss a hog on one stand because more than likely that same hog or group of hogs won't return to that stand site anytime soon. You might hear this about deer but it is much more of a hard and fast rule with hogs.

9. Hogs have a sort of shield around the vitals the best shot just like with deer is a quartering away shot. But with a hog you might even prefer it to be more of an away shot than with a deer. This quartering away shot allows the arrow to enter behind the shield. Giving a better chance for a good blood trail because a pass through shot is more likely.

10. The higher you see the tusk slashes from the ground, generally the bigger the boar.

11. Hogs might travel almost anywhere but generally prefer to bed and travel close to water and in thick cover.

12. Simple but essential. Keep something between you and the hog to break up your silhouette as you stalk any hogs.

13. If you are baiting a trap with corn and it is disappearing but you are not catching hogs it is most likely racoons eating the corn.

14. Get mud from a hog wallow and spread in and around the trap this will put the hogs at ease.
