Merriam's Wild Turkey

Habitat

  • Geographical:Rocky Mountain States

  • Topology: Gambel Oaks and Ponderosa Pines

  • Winter Roost: Dominant Toms will roost in ponderosa pines near canyons, depressions, or creek beds

  • Spring Roost: Hardwoods or Pines bordering open fields for a Strut Zone. Gambel Oaks for nesting and feeding.

  • Merriam's are transient and will travel in groups with other toms, jakes and hens
    The also use a different roost every night making the very hard to locate consistently

 

  • Merriam's Wild Turkey Tom
    • Head: White with shades of blue
    • Back Feathers: Black tipped with white
    • Tail Feathers: Black tipped with white
    • Wattle: Red
    • Snood: Red
    • Beard: up to 8 inches
    • Spurs: 1 to 1 1/2inch
    • Weight: 16 to 22 Pounds
  • Merriam's Wild Turkey Hen
    • Head: white to light brown
    • Back Feathers: Black
    • Tail Feathers: Black tipped in white
    • Weight: 8 to 15 Pounds
