Eastern Wild Turkey

Habitat

  • Geographical: Northeast, Southeast, and Midwest

  • Topology: Hardwood ridges with pockets of white pines and hemlocks, surrounded by open pasture or cropland

  • Winter Roost: Dominant Toms will roost in pines or Hemlocks near or on a rise or ridge

  • Spring Roost: Hardwoods bordering open Fields or Logging Roads for a Strut Zone.
    Early Season Toms will scarcely Strut waiting until late morning
    late in the season or a shortage of Hens will cause the tom to hit the strut straight from his roost

 

  • Eastern Wild Turkey Tom
    • Head: White with shades of blue
    • Back Feathers: Brown with bronze strip
    • Tail Feathers: Brown to Black with a white stripe
    • Wattle: Red
    • Snood: Red
    • Beard: up to 10 inches
    • Spurs: 1 to 1 1/2 inches
    • Weight: 18 to 25 Pounds
  • Eastern Wild Turkey Hen
    • Head: Blue to Gray
    • Back Feathers: Brown with bronze strip
    • Tail Feathers: Brown to Black with a white stripe
    • Beard: possible
    • Weight: 8 to 15 Pounds
