Quail Facts

Quail is the name given to several different kinds of birds. The Bobwhite Quail get's it's name from it's whistling call, which sounds like ( ah-bob-WHITE). The bird is the only kind of Quail native to the area East of the Mississippi river .

It lives in the region from the Gulf States to Canada . The Quail is a plump bird, 10 inches long. It has reddish-brown feathers with black, white, and buff markings.

The Quail builds it's nest on the ground, and lives in grassy areas. A Brood may include from 10-18 eggs or more. Grains, seeds, wild fruit, and insects are the Quail's favorite foods.

Like the Pheasant, the Quail is a true friend to the farmer and can be found all over fields and crop lands on the spots with grassy cover. Some people raise Quail for their meat and eggs. A great American game bird!

Hunting Tips

Quail is kinda like Pheasant hunting for the reason being most of the time it is done with a group of people and with a bird Dog. You can still hunt Quail without a Dog or a group by knowing where to locate them.

You wanna start by scouting out any kind of open fields you have access to hunting. Usually, you can spot Quails in Grain and Corn fields. You can also spot them on the sides of roads and creek trails.

The best part in having a group or a bird to hunt with is the fact that they tend to hide well and strut off quickly. When you do go do some scouting you will find that out.  With a properly trained Dog you can spot them in hiding and allow yourself to have a better chance at getting a clean shot, instead of having to try and take a chance at a careless lone bird while stalking. Learn your areas regulations and get a good idea of where to hunt and your sure to have fun!
